We were recently called out to an air conditioning installation that had stopped working entirely. The culprit? A loss of R290 refrigerant — and when we looked closer, it was easy to see why.
The installation was poor throughout. We found kinked and split copper pipe, and — a personal favourite — PTFE tape applied to flared joints. Flared joints are metal-to-metal seals. PTFE tape has no place on an AC installation.
R290 is propane. It's flammable, it's an A3-rated refrigerant, and a leak in an enclosed space is a genuine fire and explosion risk. This isn't an "oops, the system stopped working" situation — it's a safety issue!
We repaired the system, sorted the pipework, and left the installation in the condition it should have been in from day one (see photo two).
Which brings us to the bigger picture — should online companies be selling air conditioning kits to unqualified, inexperienced people?
